August 15th, the Omaha Public School (OPS) Board met for their first meeting of the 2016-17 school year. On the agenda were two items that could impact student privacy and safety:
  1. The first reading of an amendment to Policy 1200, the OPS Elimination of Discrimination policy, to include gender identity and gender expression.
  2. Board discussion of allowing some students access to restrooms and locker rooms of the opposite sex.

During the time for public comment, Karen Bowling and Nate Grasz both offered testimonies.

Despite a strong showing of opposition, the OPS board unanimously voted to advance Policy 1200 on first reading. A majority of the members also indicated that they would support a more specific policy to allow some students access to the bathrooms and locker rooms of the opposite sex.

Omaha Public Schools recently adopted policies enacting controversial Comprehensive Sex Education in Human Growth and Development classes. If you’d like to opt your child out of these classes, download this form and follow the instructions: OPS Opt Out Form.
The next board meeting is Wednesday, September 7th. Nebraska Family Alliance will continue to monitor the progression of these policies.
