What is a Matching Fund?

A matching fund is funds that are committed by a benefactor to be given in response to other contributions made to the same cause or organization.

Matching funds come in all shapes and sizes. Some are dollar for dollar, others are 50 cents on the dollar or they may double or triple the original gift! Total amount of the matching fund can also vary. For example, large national nonprofits will often have a matching fund campaign of more than a million dollars.

How does it work?

Oftentimes there are certain requirements for donations to be matched by such a fund. Factors can include donation date, randomization, total amount given towards the cause or any other factor desired by the benefactor.

All donations that meet the specified requirements are noted and the matching fund benefactor matches those funds when they give to the cause.

Why Participate in a Matching Fund?

Matching funds provide an opportunity to increase your impact in a cause. Participating in a match fund can literally double the impact of your dollar. Plus, it’s inspiring to know that there are people with who give generously to support the issues that are close to your own heart.

NFA’s 2017 Year End Matching Fund

$60,000

The 2016 Matching Fund is $60,000. This means that generous benefactors will match every dollar given up to $60,000.

Dollar for Dollar

The matching fund is dollar for dollar. A $20 donation from Donor A will result in a $20 donation from the matching fund donors. ($20 effectively becomes $40.)

Deadline: December 31st

Donations must be made before Midnight on December 31st.
