For the past several years, NFA has participated in “Give to Lincoln Day.” The annual event, sponsored and supported by the Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF), aims to encourage community members to give to non-profits they believe in, and LCF provides a significant matching gift to organizations based on the donations they receive.
Due to a new “non-discrimination affirmation” statement on gender and sexual orientation that non-profits are required to sign to participate, which would undermine our faith-based values and mission, NFA is not participating in “Give to Lincoln Day.”
These new requirements impose a social and political agenda on all non-profits and go far beyond any non-discrimination requirements under Nebraska Law.
The LCF initially also required all non-profits to agree to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) “Hate Map,” which labels organizations that affirm a Biblical worldview of marriage and sexuality as a “hate group.” Many respected and mainstream Christian organizations have been labeled a “Hate Group” by the SPLC, including some of our allied organizations.
As we became aware of these new requirements, NFA began fielding many calls and questions from other faith-based non-profits that had concerns.
This spring, NFA led a coalition of a diverse group of faith-based organizations in meeting with the LCF leadership team to respectfully ask that this non-discrimination requirement be removed. LCF informed us that this affirmation statement would remain a requirement for participation.
As a result, we, along with 40+ other faith-based organizations, have decided we cannot, in good conscience, participate in the official “Give to Lincoln Day” event this year.
We are disappointed but resolved to exit Give to Lincoln Day, so we can continue to offer real hope to those we serve while remaining true to our mission, vision, and values.
Our faith compels us to love and serve our neighbors, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or behavior. We believe every person should be treated with dignity and respect and not suffer unjust discrimination.
We also strongly believe that faith is essential to human flourishing and that any effort to restrict or diminish our faith’s free expression and practice will have a profoundly negative impact on the flourishing of our neighbors and Lincoln as a whole.
We are committed to not participating in or taking money from any program that restricts or adds unwarranted and unjust secular requirements to our Biblically-based mission and values.
So, while you will not be able to support NFA through “Give to Lincoln Day,” we are instead inviting you to “Give to Life & Liberty” by donating directly to NFA during the month of May and help us meet our $75,000 match challenge.
We rely exclusively on you and other donors to give as they would have during “Give to Lincoln Day” and, if possible, to give sacrificially.
Our state and nation are at a crossroads. But we have a historic opportunity before us to protect and advance life and liberty with grace and truth. That’s why we are committed to turning this obstacle into an opportunity.
