An expanded gambling bill (LB 619) which NFA opposed and worked to prevent from becoming law, failed to advance from the state legislature.
The bill, which would have expanded gambling in Nebraska by distributing an unlimited amount of poker licenses to liquor license holders across the state, died on a cloture vote and will not be up for debate again unless reprioritized by a senator this legislative session.
While legalized poker gambling may appear harmless to many, it is not an innocent change. NFA opposed the legislation because:
- Gambling losses would have increased as a result of this bill.
- The vast majority of people who play poker lose money. Nebraska citizens would be taken advantage of and separated from their hard-earned money.
- Unlimited wagering and distribution of licenses would occur.
- LB 619 is unconstitutional, and would have led to extensive litigation.
- If passed, LB 619 would have created numerous social costs and harmed families, finances, and reputations.

Nebraska families, businesses and communities will be adversely affected if gambling is expanded in our state. Our government should promote activities that support the general well-being of its citizen’s – not destructive behavior.
