The Nebraska Legislature just scheduled debate on three bills that could have a major impact on life, children, and families in our state—and senators need to hear from you.

On short notice, two NFA-supported bills and one NFA-opposed bill were placed on the agenda, and debate could start as early as today.

LB 383 will protect children from the harms of social media, LB 632 will prevent abortion clinics from treating aborted babies like medical waste, and LR 20CA seeks to amend the constitution to legalize online sports betting.

Please pray for state senators to have wisdom and courage, and contact your senator to urge them to support LB 383 and LB 632 and oppose LR 20CA.

SUPPORT

LB 383: The Parental Rights in Social Media Act

    • LB 383 ensures parents can protect their children online by requiring age verification and parental consent before minors can open social media accounts.
    • Studies show a direct link between social media use and increased stress, anxiety, and depression in minors. Parents, not tech companies, should have the right to decide when their child is ready for social media.
    • This bill ensures that minors cannot bypass age restrictions and gives parents oversight tools to monitor their children’s activity, privacy settings, and time spent online.

LB 632: Humane Disposition of Fetal Remains

    • LB 632 ensures that the remains of unborn children are treated with basic human dignity by requiring facilities that perform abortions to bury or cremate the remains of an unborn child.
    • Currently, abortion providers treat the bodies of unborn children as medical waste that can be thrown in the trash or sewer.
    • No child should ever be labeled as medical waste. We must continue to advance policies that build a culture of life and uphold the dignity and worth of every person.

OPPOSE

LR 20CA: Online Sports Betting

    • LR 20CA seeks to expand gambling from inside casinos to mobile and electronic devices statewide, removing critical safeguards and allowing online gambling 24/7 from any phone, tablet, and computer.
    • With online sports gambling, people can gamble directly from their bank accounts without ever leaving their homes or interacting with another person, and the consequences for families and children have been devastating: severe increases in addiction, abuse, and bankruptcies, decreases in household spending and savings, and exposure to predatory gambling advertisements.
    • Nebraska has a citizen initiative process for amending our constitution. This legislation would allow gambling companies to bypass our ballot initiative signature collection process and be placed directly on the ballot. The legislature should not provide the gambling industry political favors at the expense of Nebraska families and communities.
