Husker athletes and coaches just took a bold stand against billion-dollar gambling companies to protect our kids, families, and the future of Nebraska.
Forty-five Nebraska coaches and athletes signed a powerful letter urging Nebraskans to vote “No” on Initiatives 440 and 441, which would put 24/7 online sports betting into our state constitution.
Out-of-state gambling companies are pouring millions into these initiatives, and they are lying to Nebraska voters about tax relief.
But these Nebraska coaches and athletes know what the gambling companies don’t want voters to see: this isn’t about helping our state. It’s about out-of-state gambling companies turning every phone into a casino, every play into a wager, and aggressively advertising to get as many people gambling and losing as possible.
In their letter, they deliver a powerful warning:
“These groups do not care about our athletes, our traditions, or Nebraska families. They see our state as another market and every phone as another casino.”
They’re right. Out-of-state gambling companies are funding these initiatives and trying to mislead voters because they stand to profit at the expense of our families and student-athletes.
Proponents tout “over $160 million in tax relief,” but they’re not telling voters that’s a 10-year figure that would offset property taxes by less than half of 1%, and that for the state to collect this revenue from Nebraska’s 20% gaming tax, Nebraskans would have to lose over $800 million dollars to out-of-state gambling companies.
That’s why even our state auditor is warning citizens, “you’re being scammed on false promises of property tax relief.”
Dave Ramsey said only sports betting is “destroying a generation of young men,” and the Governor of Ohio called legalizing online sports betting his “biggest mistake” in seven years as governor.
Online sports betting has been a massive failure in every state and causes tremendous financial and familial harm. And when social costs like addiction, suicide, and broken homes increase, it’s taxpayers and families—not gambling companies—who pay the price.
We’re grateful for the courageous athletes and coaches who are making a stand in Nebraska.
