The U.S. Senate voted on a bill last week to ensure Planned Parenthood doesn’t receive any taxpayer funds. Nebraska Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse cosponsored this bill and voted for it. Unfortunately, this important measure didn’t get the 60 votes needed.
Yet it was certainly a step in the right direction.
According to SBA List, the last time the Senate voted on similar legislation in 2011, the bill received 42 votes. This time, it received 53, and could have had 55 votes, but Senator Graham wasn’t in attendance, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voted no for procedural reasons.
This progress is important. Making major policy change is a long process. It takes perseverance and steadfastness. But if we are committed to the cause, it can happen.
The fifth undercover video by The Center for Medical Progress, was released last Tuesday and it continues to motivate us to ensure that Planned Parenthood no longer receives taxpayer money.
The U.S. House is in the midst of the August recess. Now is the time to connect with your representation in the House of Representatives and ask them about the Planned Parenthood videos.
The good news is, Congressman Fortenberry of District. 1 and Congressman Smith of District. 3 are co-sponsors of H.R.3134. This bill prohibits, for a one-year period, the availability of federal funds for any purpose to Planned Parenthood unless they certify that the affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, abortions. Take a moment to call or email them to thank them for their strong stand for Life.
Congressman Ashford, the representative of District 2 has not made his position on the federal funding of Planned Parenthood clear.
