5 Key Victories from This Year’s Legislative Session

Debates. Hearings. Filibusters. Long nights. Generational wins. 

These are just a few of the words that could be used to summarize this year’s legislative session, which officially adjourned on June 1st.

Throughout many ups and downs, you played a critical role in helping secure several major wins for pro-life and family values and defeat the extreme efforts that tried to prevent common-sense, NFA-supported bills from advancing.

Here are five key victories from this year’s legislative session: 

1. Protected Children From “Gender-Altering” Surgeries 

With the passage of LB 574, Nebraska joined a growing list of states taking action to protect children from irreversible transgender surgeries.

Thanks to tireless advocacy and countless prayers, senators stood strong against a session-long filibuster from opposing senators and ensured children receive help not harm, treatment not transition, and protection not politics.

2. Nebraska’s Abortion Law Moved From 22 Weeks To 12 Weeks Gestation 

After the heartbeat bill failed to advance by one vote, pro-life senators were able to salvage the session and found another way to better protect women and babies in our state by prohibiting abortion after 12 weeks.

While this is not everything we hoped to see accomplished this year, this important step forward finally ended the practice of late-term abortion and stopped Nebraska from becoming a destination state for abortion.

We must continue working to ensure every life is valued and protected.

3. Nebraska’s First School Choice Bill Passed Into Law 

In a historic, hard-fought victory, the Nebraska Legislature established our state’s first school choice program through the advancement of LB 753, the Opportunity Scholarships Act.

This program will help provide more scholarship opportunities for vulnerable children to attend a school of their parents’ choice, putting power back into the hands of parents.

4. New “Right” to Abortion Blocked From Being Added To The State Constitution 

In the first legislative session since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, pro-abortion activists had their target set on establishing a “right” to abortion in our state constitution, and three separate abortion constitutional amendments were introduced this year.

NFA testified in opposition to each of these proposals, and none advanced from committee.

5. Bills Opposed By NFA Were Defeated 

Every bill that was opposed by NFA failed to advance this session. This included proposals seeking to force transgender ideology in schools, undermine the truth about marriage, and force counselors to affirm transgenderism and same-sex attraction in children.

Religious liberty was protected, parental rights were upheld, and efforts to expand abortion were defeated.
