Religious freedom doesn’t stop at the schoolhouse gate. LB 550 protects students’ First Amendment rights while empowering parents to direct their children’s education and spiritual development.

This bill allows students in public schools to attend an off-campus course for religious instruction that aligns with their family’s values during the school day, with parental permission.

Over 30 states have already implemented released-time religious instruction programs, and Nebraska families deserve the same opportunity with LB 550:

    • School districts will adopt a policy excusing students for at least one class period per week to attend a religious education course off school property with written parental consent.
    • Students have the option to earn academic credit for participating, evaluated using neutral standards—just like any other elective course.
    • The process is low-maintenance for schools. No public funds are used, and parents and the sponsoring entity are responsible for transporting students.

Take action to support the ability of students to take Bible classes during the school day and expand parental rights in Nebraska. Please submit an online comment in support of LB 550 before 8:00 AM (CST) on Monday, March 3, to be included in the official hearing record.

    • STEP 1: Access the LB 550 bill summary page.

Students should never have to choose between their education and their faith. LB 550 affirms that religious instruction can be part of a well-rounded education without compromising academic requirements.

Let’s ensure Nebraska students have the same religious freedom protections as their peers in other states to learn about the Bible and grow spiritually during school hours.
