In just one month the Supreme Court will hear one of the most important religious freedom and free speech cases of our time. The ACLU argues Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, doesn’t have a case for free speech – but they’re wrong. Jonathan Alexandre joins the podcast to explain why.

Episode 41: Why the ACLU is Wrong About Jack’s Case For Free Speech

Jonathan Alexandre joins Capitol Connection to discuss the case of Jack Phillips. Jonathan is a Policy Director and an attorney with Liberty Counsel. He is an expert on policies related to civil rights, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religious freedom.

An important case before the United States Supreme Court that touches on these issues is that of Jack Phillips, owner and operator of Masterpiece Cakeshop. Jack’s case began when he politely declined to create a cake to celebrate a same-sex wedding.

A win for Jack is a win for your freedom, regardless of whether you agree with Jack’s convictions about the definition of marriage. Jonathan points out other areas where we’d all agree business owners shouldn’t be forced to create or promote messages with which they disagree.

“You don’t want to hijack a business owners speech or production and use the state to require them to participate in things they disagree with. An African American business owner should never be forced to make a cake that celebrates a KKK rally, or make advertisements that promote a white supremacist rally. We’d never hold that standard against an individual. Nor would we require a Democratic speech writer to write speeches for President Trump.”

The real question before the court is should the state be able to force people to create artistic expressions that violate their deeply held beliefs. This is clearly a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech. Listen to the full interview for more of Jonathan’s insight on this critical case.
