Today, Karen Bowling offered public testimony in support of LB 1132. This bill would provide a procedure to set aside convictions of victims of sex trafficking and expunge related criminal records.

During her testimony, Karen recalled one of the first women she met who had been trafficked: Debbie. This woman was not a “beautiful” or young woman. Debbie was a middle-aged mother and grandmother.

It was through getting to know Debbie, that Karen learned many of the dark realities of trafficking in Nebraska: the supply and demand, the “Loop” of Interstate 80, and understanding how victims of trafficking can be caught up in a life of crime.

NFA supports LB 1132 in honor of Debbie because her story matters. Victims of human trafficking should not also have the burden of an unjust criminal record.
