Earlier this summer, a group called “Let Lincoln Vote” launched a misleading ballot initiative, attempting to enshrine the so-called “Fairness Ordinance” into Lincoln’s municipal code by forcing the Lincoln City Council to either adopt the ordinance or put it on the ballot in November.

“Let Lincoln Vote” circulated their misleading petition for 47 days and turned in 11,031 signatures on Monday—notably fewer than the 18,501 signatures we collected in just 15 days in February to rescind the same ordinance.

On Tuesday, the Lancaster County Election Commissioner announced that the ballot initiative signatures had been collected improperly, and his office would return the petitions without verifying them. The organizers of this ballot initiative failed to include a statement on the petition indicating whether petition circulators were paid or volunteer—as is required by state law.

The ballot initiative was also intentionally misleading. Petition language made no mention of the proposed changes to Lincoln’s City Code regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

As of now, it appears the “Fairness Ordinance” will not be on the ballot in November, but activists have pledged to continue efforts to pass a so-called “Fairness Ordinance” in Lincoln.

ACTIVISTS HAVE PLEDGED TO CONTINUE EFFORTS TO PASS THIS ORDINANCE

Every person should be treated with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, coercive sexual orientation and gender identity laws undermine both fairness and freedom.

Policies like this give biological men access to women’s bathrooms and locker rooms, threaten business owners with devastating financial liability, and empower the government to punish citizens with Biblical beliefs on marriage and human sexuality.

Today, we celebrate this victory for the privacy and safety of women and girls and religious freedom in Lincoln, and with your faithful support and financial partnership, we will continue working to defend your faith, family, and freedom in our community and across Nebraska against future attacks.
