The NFA Daily Spotlight: Casinos Prey On The Financially Desperate

By holding just one horserace per year, full-blown casinos could set up shop in all of Nebraska’s 93 counties if Initiatives 429, 430, and 431 pass. Casinos—open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year across Nebraska—mean widespread accessibility and availability to the poor, financially desperate, and problem gamblers. Proximity and accessibility to predatory casinos foster gambling additions.

Even casino owners recognize that gambling is addicting. In Initiative 431, gambling interests propose a Nebraska statute that requires the State of Nebraska use tax dollars to increase contributions to a gambling addiction assistance fund. Casinos bring increased bankruptcies, social costs, and taxes to the states they operate in. If casinos win, Nebraskans will lose. Vote “AGAINST” Initiatives 429, 430, and 431.
