The NFA Daily Spotlight: Marijuana Harms Families

In the upcoming election, voters may be asked to decide if Nebraska should legalize medical marijuana. Former State Senator John Kuehn of Smart Approaches to Marijuana Nebraska joins the Daily Spotlight conversation this week to share helpful information and resources about marijuana. To date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the marijuana plant as medicine.

Marijuana harms families. According to the American Psychological Association, marijuana use in adolescence or early adulthood has been associated with poor school performance, higher dropout rates, increased welfare dependence, greater unemployment, and lower life satisfaction. Teenage marijuana use is at its highest level in 30 years, and today’s teens are more likely to use marijuana than tobacco. Anyone who uses marijuana may suffer from negative health effects such as respiratory disease, a weakened immune system, pregnancy complications, and low birthweight.
